About Montenegro - Location
- At about 500 km away from Rome, 1,500 km away from Paris and Berlin, and about 2,000 km west of Moscow, Montenegro is located on the Balkan Peninsula in the very heart of Europe. It occupies the area of 13,812 sq. km. Montenegro is in the West European time zone (GMT+1). Its climate is mainly temperate continental and mediterranean.
- Montenegro is borderd by Albania on the east, Serbia on the northeast, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina on the west and shares a sea border with Italy. The length of its border is 614 km together with the 293 km long coast and 73 km long beaches.
- Montenegro is a coastal, continental and mountainous country.
- There are four climate types with a lot of slight transitions and variations. Being midway between subtropical and subpolar areas, the air coming from Africa heading north and polar air heading south interchange periodically.
- There are 40 lakes in Montenegro.

- The 2003 census states the population of Montenegro at 620,145 inhabitants. Montenegrins make up 43.16% of the population, Serbs (31.99%), Bosnians (7.77%), Albanians (5.03%), Croats (1.1%) and Roms (0.42%).
- Montenegro Railway network is 250 km long, single-track, electrified, and of normal size. Railway connects Port of Bar, Podgorica and Bijelo Polje, as well as Niksic and Podgorica with Albania via Tuzi. Railway track Niksic-Podgorica is only used for transport of goods, while Bar-Podgorica railway track is used for both passenger and goods transport.
- There are five ports intended for passenger and goods transport in Montenegro, situated in Bar, Herceg Novi, Tivat, Kotor and Zelenika.
- 95% of total passenger and goods transport in Montenegro pass through Port of Bar, which has the capacity for annual turnover and transport of 5 million tons of freight.
- There are two international airports in Montenegro: Podgorica and Tivat.
